In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between “porque” and “porquê”.

Examples

Porque

Eu cheguei tarde porque acordei tarde. // I arrived late because I woke up late.
Porque (é que) chegaste tarde? // Why did you arrive late?
Ela perguntou-lhe porque é que ele não lhe telefonou. // She asked him why he didn't call her.

Porquê

Chegaste tarde, porquê? // You arrived late, why?
Diz-me porquê. Porquê!? // Tell me why. Why!?
Diz-me o porquê de reagires assim. // Tell me the why/the reason for you to behave this way.

Dialogue transcript

— Emprestas-me dinheiro? // Will you lend me money?

— Não. // No.

— Porquê? // Why?

— Porque não. Diz-me lá porque é que não tens dinheiro. // Because. Tell me why you don’t have money.

— Preferia não dizer. // I’d rather not say.

— Mas porquê? Se eu não souber o porquê deste pedido, não te empresto nada. // But why? If I don’t know the why/the reason for this request, I won’t lend you anything.

— Está bem. Porque pedi dinheiro emprestado e agora preciso de o devolver. // Alright. Because I borrowed money and now I need to return it.

— A quem é que pediste dinheiro emprestado? // Whom did you borrow money from?

— A ti. // From you.
