In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between “para” and “por”.
I’ll explain the difference with a few examples, and after that, you’ll listen to a dialogue where you can see both words in action.

Eu vou para o escritório. // I’m going to the office.
Eu faço exercício para ser saudável. // I workout to be healthy.
Este presente é para ti. // This present is for you.
Por
Eu vou pela floresta. // I go through the forest.
O autocarro passa pela minha rua. // The bus goes by my street.
O barco vai pelo rio. // The boat goes down the river.
Eu fiquei em Portugal por dois meses. // I stayed in Portugal for two months.

— Olá, querido! // Hello, dear!
— Uh, olá, Isabel. Não estava à espera que aparecesses aqui. // Uh, hello, Isabel. I wasn't expecting you to show up here.
— Surpresa! Estas flores são para mim? Oh, que amoroso. // Surprise! Are these flowers for me? Oh, how sweet.
— Sim, sim. Como é que chegaste aqui? Eu pensava que ias estar no centro da cidade no escritório. // Yes, yes. How did you get here? I thought you were going to be downtown in the office.
— Cortei caminho pelo parque e depois apanhei o autocarro. Passa mesmo por aqui. É muito mais rápido. // I cut my way through the park and then took the bus. It goes by here. It’s much faster.
— E para que é que vieste até aqui? // And why did you come here?
— Credo. Até parece que não estás contente por me ver. Vim aqui para te ver. Estava com saudades. Eu sei que só vais cá estar por uma semana. Por isso queria aproveitar bem o tempo. // Jesus. It looks like you're not happy to see me. I came here to see you. I missed you. I know you're only going to be here for a week. So I wanted to make the most of my time.
— Mas eu ia sair agora mesmo. // But I was about to leave right now.
— Mas para onde é que vais a esta hora? // But where are you going at this hour?
— Uh. Vou para casa. // Uh. I'm going home.
— Tão cedo? Porque é que estás tão estranho? Ei! Está aqui um cartão nas flores. Diz: para a Carla, do teu amorzinho. Parece que afinal de contas vim aqui para te matar! // So early? Why are you acting so weird? Hey! There is a card in the flowers here. It says: for Carla, from your sweetheart. It seems that after all I came here to kill you!
