In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between “todo” and “tudo”.

I’ll explain the difference with a few examples, and after that, you’ll listen to a dialogue where you can see both words in action.

Examples

Todo

Ele comeu o bolo todo. // He ate the whole cake.
Ele bebeu a água toda. // He drank all the water.
Eles viram os filmes todos. // They watched all the movies.
Eles compraram as revistas todas. // They bought all the magazines.

Tudo

Eu estudei tudo para o exame. // I studied everything for the exam.
Percebi tudo o que disseste. // I understood everything that you said.

Dialogue transcript

— Esta é a minha casa nova. // This is my new home.

— Uau! Tem uma vista impressionante. // Wow! It has an impressive view.

— Sim. Podes ver tudo daqui. // Yes. You can see everything from here.

— Realmente. Vês o vale todo e a cidade toda. E as montanhas? // Indeed. You see the whole valley and the whole city. And the mountains?

— Não se veem todas daqui, mas podes ver um bocadinho se te inclinares assim. // You can't see them all from here, but you can see a little if you lean like this.

— Hmm, sim, isto é tudo muito bonito. Mas e que barulho é este? // Hmm, yes, this is all very beautiful. But what is this noise?

— É o barulho do aeroporto. Os aviões passam todos em frente à minha janela. // It's the noise from the airport. All the planes go by my window.

— A toda a hora? // All the time?

— Infelizmente, sim. O agente imobiliário trouxe-me cá exatamente quando não há voos. E foi assim que gastei o meu dinheiro todo nesta casa. // Sadly, yes. The real estate agent brought me here exactly when there are no flights. And that's how I spent all my money on this house.

— Não te preocupes. Tudo se vai resolver. Ouvi dizer que vem aí um vírus e todos os aeroportos vão fechar durante uns tempos. // Do not worry. Everything will be fine. I heard that a virus is coming and all the airports will close for a while.
