In this episode, we’re looking at the difference between “tanto” and “tão”.

I’ll explain the difference with a few examples, and after that, you’ll listen to a dialogue where you can see both words in action.

Tanto

Ele comeu tanto que adormeceu. // He ate so much that he fell asleep.
A Joana fala tanto! // Joana speaks so much!
Ele tem tanto tempo livre! // He has so much free time!
A professora tem tanta paciência! // The teacher has so much patience!
Há tantos carros na estrada. // There are so many cars on the road.
Eu tenho tantas moedas na carteira. // I have so many coins in my wallet.

Tão

Ele é tão alto! // He is so tall!
Esta casa é tão perto do mar que assusta. // This house is so close to the sea that it’s scary.

Dialogue transcript

— Ufa. Estou tão cansado. // Phew. I'm so tired.

— Então porquê? // Why, then?

— Tinha tanto trabalho para fazer hoje que não parei um segundo. // I had so much work to do today that I didn't stop for a second.

— Estás sempre tão ocupado. Porque é que não vais de férias? // You are always so busy. Why don't you go on vacation?

— Não posso. Quem é que alimenta os leões? // I can’t. Who feeds the lions?

— Não tens um assistente? // Don't you have an assistant?

— Tinha. Arriscou demasiado. // I had. He took too many risks.

— Não consegues arranjar um substituto? Com tantas pessoas a precisar de trabalho. // Can't you find a replacement? With so many people in need of work.

— Não tenhas assim tanta esperança. O povo prefere assisitr em vez de trabalhar. // Don't get your hopes high. The people prefer to watch rather than work.

— Talvez os próximos gladiadores sejam mais fortes e consigam ganhar. // Maybe the next gladiators are stronger and can win.

— Duvido. São tantos, mas nem assim sobrevive um para o espetáculo seguinte. // I doubt it. They are so many, but not even so does one survive for the next show.

— Pois, que chatice. // Right, what a nuisance.
