Bem vindos ao episódio 57 do Portuguese Lab Podcast. Here is a dialogue using the vocabulary from the previous episode about farming. Here, two neighbors meet near their lands.

– Bom dia, Sérgio. Como é que vai?
– Good morning, Sérgio. How are you doing?
– Vamos indo, dona Ana. E a senhora?
– Alright, Mrs. Ana. What about you?
– Olhe, estou numa luta com as ervas daninhas!
– Oh, I'm in a fight with the weeds!
– Ui, isso é uma luta constante. Eu passava aí com o meu trator para capinar a terra, mas o seu quintal é demasiado pequeno.
– Oh, that is a constant struggle. I would go there with my tractor to weed the land, but your yard is too small.
– Ah, pois, não dá! Tenho de arrancá-las à mão. E depois vou adubar a terra antes de começar a horta. Já tenho ali umas sementes preparadas para semear. Por falar nisso, que adubo e é que o Sérgio usa para adubar o seu terreno?
– Oh, right, it’s not possible! I have to pull them out by hand. And then I'll fertilize the land before I start the vegetable garden. I already have some seeds ready to plant. By the way, what fertilizer do you (does Sérgio) use to fertilize your land?
– Uso estrume de cavalo. Pode comprá-lo ali no Sr. Mendes perto do cemitério.
– I use horse manure. You can buy it there at Mr. Mendes, near the graveyard.
– Vou fazer isso, obrigada. Como é que anda o seu pomar?
– I'll do that, thank you. How is your orchard doing?
– Mais umas semanas e já se podem apanhar as laranjas. Depois trago-lhe umas!
– A few more weeks, and one can pick the oranges. I'll bring you some then!
– Agradecia-lhe imenso!
– It would be very much appreciated!

– De resto as árvores de fruto estão bem, mas tenho uns enxertos que estão a dar problemas.
– Otherwise, the fruit trees are fine, but I have some grafts that are causing problems.
– Não me diga que vai ter de enxertar tudo de novo!
– Don’t tell me you'll have to graft everything all over again!
– Pois, não sei, vamos lá ver. Agora tenho é de me preocupar com as queimadas. Tenho ali pilhas de restos de podas para queimar.
– Well, I don’t know, let's see. Now I have to worry about the fires. I have there piles of remains from the pruning to burn.
– Agora nesta altura do ano não há problema, pois não?
– There isn’t a problem this time of year, is there?
– Olhe, sei lá. Já passou aí a GNR* ontem a dizer que há risco elevado de incêndio!
– Look, I don’t know. The GNR has come by yesterday saying that there is a high risk of forest fire!
– Não me diga! Com este frio?
– You don’t say! In this cold?
– Pois, vai-se lá entender...
– Right, go figure...
